Frequently Asked Questions
What is a NAICS code?
NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) is the standard used by the U.S. Census Bureau and federal agencies to classify businesses by industry. The current version is NAICS 2022, containing 2,133 industry codes organized into 20 sectors.
What is a SIC code?
SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) codes are an older system used by the SEC, OSHA, and many insurance and banking systems. While NAICS has officially replaced SIC for Census purposes, SIC codes are still widely required for SEC filings, workers compensation, and commercial insurance.
When do I need a NAICS code?
You need a NAICS code for SBA loan applications, government contracting (SAM.gov registration), Census Bureau surveys, business tax filings, and many state business license applications. Banks and lenders also use NAICS codes for underwriting.
How is the sector hierarchy structured?
NAICS codes use a 6-digit hierarchical structure: 2 digits for sector, 3 for subsector, 4 for industry group, 5 for NAICS industry, and 6 for the national industry. For example, 541511 breaks down as: 54 (Professional Services) → 541 (Professional, Scientific, Technical) → 5415 (Computer Systems Design) → 54151 (Computer Systems Design Services) → 541511 (Custom Computer Programming).
